From waste to raw material – Musselfeed is valorising…
Mussels can be a challenging raw material to handle in several respects. Not least because there are a lot of shells to handle as a by-product during processing. Approximately 50% of the raw material used remains in the form of fractioned shells. However, they too have great potential– the shells are rich in calcium with a small amount of nitrogen and phosphorus, which makes them useful in a number of different application areas such as poultry feed, garden products and plastics.

Thanks to the Swedish Board of Agriculure granting SEK 411,000 in project support from the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture fund, we have been able to invest in a drying machine that allows the shells to be sanitized. Now we can finally work on developing the shells from waste to useful raw material. The objective is a business where nothing goes to waste and full circularity is achieved.
If you are in the aquaculture industry and want to develop your business, it is well worth familiarizing yourself with the program’s possibilities. More information can be found on the Swedish Board of Agriculture’s website.
