Our history

It has been a long road to be where we are. A lot of research is done and many different tests is carried out. Here are som highlight from the company and the founder Odd Lindahl.

The idea!

The idea!
It all started as an enviromental project. Odd Lindhal investigated blue musselsfarms as base for extracting nutrients from the sea, such as the phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N). After successfully proven to do this the question of what to do with all the wast from the blue mussle industry. For exampel all the mussels that were to small for the food industry. The thougt about animal food started to grow.

Mussels as animal feed?

Mussels as animal feed?
Tests with blue mussel meat for hens started. In the beginning it was heated meat. They liked it better!

Egg check after mussel feed

Egg check after mussel feed
Mussel feed gave better eggs. Even only 10% mussels in the feed improved the quality. If the hens did there own pick of food the eggs were even better.

Sponge cake test

Sponge cake test
The sponge cake on the top left baked with mussel eggs, on the right with standard eggs. The cakes were shown and tasted at the annual meeting of organic egg producers and aroused great attention and delight.

2003-2006 Study on hens

2003-2006 Study on hens
SLU carried out a large experiment with 1000 hens that received mussel flour in the feed during an entire production period (2003-2006). The experiment was successful and showed that the mussel powder can replace fishmeal and was even better in some respects concerning animal health.

2005-2007 Study on improving soil

2005-2007 Study on improving soil
The household society carried out a series of cultivation experiments to investigate the supply of nutrients and the liming effect when residual mussels (meat and shells) were added to agricultural land. The results were clearly positive and several farms on Orust have over the years received residual mussels.

2009-2014 – Pilot production

2009-2014 – Pilot production
A pilot plant for the production of mussel flour was built in Ellös. First, boiled / frozen mussel meat was used, which became a few tonnes of mussel flour. The product was mainly used in various experiments in the Nordic countries in feed for fish and poultry. Almost all attempts were successful.

The innovation! – Musselfeed is born

The innovation! – Musselfeed is born
After years of trying the innovation took place. Musselfeed cracked the code on how to separate the shells from the meat and create a mussel extract that was easy to dry and store. The method is patent pending.

Finding the best use of mussel powder

Finding the best use of mussel powder
After all research the possibilitys were huge. But where to start? Is it for human food, animal feed or as a taste enhancer. Different tests on animal feed and food competitions took place. It worked everywere! To meet all demands the idea of three different qualitys was developed. Feed, food and taste qualitys with different characterisics.
