We’re finally up and running again! During February and March, the first production round of the year will be run at the pilot plant in Ellös. 80% of the volumes are already pre-booked! Do not hesitate to contact us if you are curious about testing the mussel flour (or powder) in your business (email firstname.lastname@example.org).
So far, Musselfeed is a small-scale producer, but preparations are in full swing to be able to scale up capacity so that production can be up and running all year round. Next year, the plan is to more than fivefold the volumes.
Mällby Lantgård on Tjörn has pre-booked 1.25 tonnes of mussel flour for 2021 and will thus be Musselfeed’s largest customer! It is a first step in the farm’s ambition to gradually switch to mussel flour as a protein source for its chickens.
After participating in a project funded by the Swedish Board of Agriculture (2017-2020), Mällby has had the opportunity to test the mussel meal in a major challenge attempt – with very successful results. The mussel meal was confirmed to be a good source of protein and nutrition, the hens got a thicker plumage and reduced need for the basic feed. The organic eggs with mussel protein had several advantages compared to the regular eggs, such as yellower color and higher content of omega-3 and omega-6. Consumers clearly showed that the eggs were appreciated – the eggs were sold as a premium product at a higher price and everything went well.
This is the single biggest thing that has happened on the feed side. This means that we can have a 100% organic feed. There is no other feed that has the combination that it both gives the hen what it needs and at the same time helps to improve the environment in the sea. Finally, the hens can be involved and work for a better environment!says Maria Karlsson at Mällby Lantgård
Musselfeed has appointed Jessica Vacklid as the new CEO starting from 1 December. After several years of research and development, the company is ready to scale up and establish itself in the market – and to create the conditions for successfully taking that step will be the new CEO’s most important assignment.
Jessica has extensive experience of leadership and business development skills in various positions, in both small and large organizations. In recent years, she has worked with business management and business development at Bzzt, another start-up with a focus on sustainable development in the field of mobility.
The innovation and product that Musselfeed has developed combines what motivates me the most – something that does good both by being manufactured and used and that contributes to driving development in an area forward to greater sustainability. Circular cycles, protein shifts, sustainable food and feed production, cleaner seas, blue nutrients and more seafood – there are so many right here! I take on this task with great inspiration and joy.Jessica Vacklid

Well written article on Krav.se regarding Krav-certified Mällby farm that uses musselfeed as a protein source for their chickens instead of using protein from fish. This means not only less enviroment impact from reduced fishing, it also helps the cleaning process og the oceans, since mussels naturally cleans the ocean.
