Mällby farm all in for Musselfeed
Mällby Lantgård on Tjörn has pre-booked 1.25 tonnes of mussel flour for 2021 and will thus be Musselfeed’s largest customer! It is a first step in the farm’s ambition to gradually switch to mussel flour as a protein source for its chickens.
After participating in a project funded by the Swedish Board of Agriculture (2017-2020), Mällby has had the opportunity to test the mussel meal in a major challenge attempt – with very successful results. The mussel meal was confirmed to be a good source of protein and nutrition, the hens got a thicker plumage and reduced need for the basic feed. The organic eggs with mussel protein had several advantages compared to the regular eggs, such as yellower color and higher content of omega-3 and omega-6. Consumers clearly showed that the eggs were appreciated – the eggs were sold as a premium product at a higher price and everything went well.
This is the single biggest thing that has happened on the feed side. This means that we can have a 100% organic feed. There is no other feed that has the combination that it both gives the hen what it needs and at the same time helps to improve the environment in the sea. Finally, the hens can be involved and work for a better environment!
